DFW analysis can help you answer these questions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DFW (Drop-Fail-Withdrawal) rates provide clues about where things are breaking down for students trying to move through your institution\u2019s programs. Classes with high DFW rates often present obstacles for students in terms of access to and affordability of course materials. OER helps remove these obstacles and set students up for greater success. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are the steps to complete your DFW analysis focused on which courses are great targets for broadening your impact and ability to scale use of OER: <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Request course data: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask your institutional research office for the following data:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">List of the top 20 highest-enrollment courses at your institution<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DFW rates for each course<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Request or find bookstore data:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ask your bookstore for (or look-up online) the average cost of course materials for each of these top 20 highest enrollment courses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Add your data to <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1kVlNHt0ACB4Z8JOLRrNnsrlcEmaM5uwOcLZ6QUJtO-0\/edit?usp=sharing\"><b>this spreadsheet<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or something like it, to help you compare enrollment levels, DFW rates, and potential cost savings for courses that shift to OER. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Identify which courses have solid OER available.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Look up which courses have great OER content available, using sources you trust like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lumenlearning.com\/courses\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lumen Course Catalog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/open.bccampus.ca\/find-open-textbooks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BCcampus Open Textbooks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/openstax.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OpenStax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Note which courses have receptive faculty or department heads. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Capture this information in the spreadsheet because these are always low-hanging fruit. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Note where curriculum review is already in progress.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If curriculum review or course redesign is already planned or in progress, these courses may be good targets because the department is already poised for change. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Set priority levels for shifting each course to OER<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, based on the combination of factors captured. Give a higher priority to courses with these factors:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High DFW rate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Large number of student enrollments<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High potential textbook cost saving if you shift to OER<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Receptive faculty and\/or department head<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High quality OER already available <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curriculum review \/ course redesign already planned or in progress \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This process helps you compare relevant information about the courses that represent the greatest potential for making a broader impact with OER. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The analysis itself can be a great conversation-starter with administrators and department heads, helping them capture the vision of what OER might offer to improve student outcomes. Consider turning the analysis into a program proposal to set strategy and generate greater administrative support for scaling your OER initiative. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 500;\">After the Number-Crunching<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve completed the analysis, start working with faculty, department heads, and other colleagues to gauge receptivity for exploring a shift to OER.
